App Appreciation

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Sometimes I wonder what life was like before iPhones. I grew up in that weird generation where we didn't have loads of technology as young children, but by the time we were in grade school the internet was a thing. Basically, I wasn't a 7 year old with an iPhone. I did however have a cell phone in middle school, one that pre-dates text messages. From there I updated to various flip phones and eventually to a BlackBerry in college.
(Remember BBM? lol)  Then along came the holy grail of smart phones: the iPhone. I would be lying if I said I wasn't totally dependent on it. I certainly don't use it to its fullest capacity, for instance I hate iCal and I don't think I will EVER get rid of my agenda book, but there are a few apps that I just simply couldn't function without. Okayyyy that may be an exaggeration but seriously, there are some amazing apps out there.  If I had to pick just a few to have on my phone besides the basics, these would be my picks:

1| Snapchat- fine judge me. I think it is hilarious. Why text your BFFs when you can send goofy pictures of your face?

2| Instagram- I'm obsessed and I don't care. Never mind being totally stereotypical and posting my outfit's of the day, pictures of my food and pictures of my cat. I can out #hashtag anyone, any day.

3| Starbucks- I'm a Gold Member. What are you going to say about it? I love being about to load my monthly Starbucks budget onto the app so I'm guaranteed not to go over. Plus, watching that little cup fill up with stars just lights up my life.

4| Fitbit- I just recently got a Fitbit Flex and while it is not so accurate counting steps done while crutching, now that I am back on two legs again, it serves as a nice reminder to get my butt up and move. Plus, you can cheer on...or taunt your friends. How's that for fitness motivation?

5| SparkPeople- this is a calorie counting app from the gods. If we are being honest, the FitBit calorie counter kind of sucks because you can't scan barcodes. (HELLO FITBIT ARE YOU READING THIS??) And SparkPeople literally has every possible food item all loaded in. Then I can just quick add a # of calories to my FitBit and voila it tells me my net. Wahoo.

6| Weather Whiskers- this is mostly just hilarious. It a mostly accurate-ish weather app that not only tells you the temperature but also gives you a cute little kitten with instructions such as "Many Sunz. Time 4 Nap", or simply "Meh" FINE FINE FINE I'm a cat lady, I admit it.

7| Pages- pretty basic, but it allows me to update all the Facebook pages I manage while on the go. I make it sound like I manage tons...there are 4. I manage 4. (Legally Leslie, the local KD alumnae chapter page, my mom's event planning page and one from a college project) really, I update 3. BUT Facebook just updated the pages manager so you can schedule posts. God bless ya' Facebook.

8| Fly Delta- Well...ATL-->DTW usually happens on Delta for me, so this app is great for checking in, checking bags, and having my boarding pass not end up crumpled at the bottom of my carry on. And when I have lovelies come visit I can track their flight status and watch them get closer.

9| Black's Law Dictionary- This is one of the only app's I have ever paid for. *ouch* but it has come in handy for looking up legalese on the school. #win

What are y'all's can't live without apps?

Fourth of July Fashions!

I think Fourth of July is the most fun because there are so many great ways to incorporate red, white and blue into your outfit! You can be subtle or go all out...I am definitely in the camp who goes all out. I mean, why not? Here are some of my red, white and blue themed picks:

25 before 25 Update!

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Y'all. I am on a roll. Seriously. If you don't remember my original post, you can check out my full list here.  But here is an update of what I have accomplished so far!

17. Break my Dr. Pepper Addiction - This. I am so so excited about this. I have not had Dr. Pepper since my surgery. None. AND I even tried a sip of one a few days ago and literally gagged. I'm gonna call that a BIG win.

23. Find and refinish / decorate a really awesome piece of furniture for my dining room- Remember my Bar Cart DIY well, not only is it absolutely perfect for my dining room, I am STILL obsessed with the way it turned out. It is the perfect size for the space and is exactly what I was looking for!

Okay, so maybe I've only accomplished two things. But #17 was the one I saw as the biggest challenge, and I did it! YAY!

You may have heard all the buzz about the New Covergirl Bombshell Curvaceous Mascara that recently hit the shelves.

Well, I have tried it and I am here to tell you all about it. I actually tested it out for Morgan's Bachelorette party this past weekend. Here is a photo of what my eyes looked like with this mascara.

'scuse my silly face, and let me remind you: bachelorette party.

Anywho-- as you can see above, my eyelashes were pretty dang long and defined. I loved the way they looked and was very happy with the way that my eyes popped in photos. The look stayed all night long, no smudges and no flakes! My only complaint was that the tub was massive which made application a little awkward, but I made it work. I was pretty impressed. Until it was time to go to bed...
I am always SUPER good about washing my face and taking off all my makeup before I go to bed. No matter what. But this mascara was nearly impossible to get off. I tried everything...eye make up remover, make up remover cleansing wipes, soap and water, my face wash...literally everything. Six face-washes later and I was still trying to scrub this stuff off my eyelashes. It wasn't even a waterproof version! YIKES.

The bottom line: Loved the look, hated how hard it was to get off. I probably won't be using this stuff every day. Maybe on special occasions where I was my lashes to be #bombshelling for days..maybe.

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Bachelorette Bash!

Sunday, June 22, 2014

As you know from previous posts, I have the honor of standing up my my girl Morgan's wedding this August. I am so so excited for the day to get here, but in the mean time we have had tons of fun with the pre-wedding events. I planned the bachelorette party, which took place this past weekend and it was a blast!! We had a great time taking a limo to our various destinations around Atlanta, and of course a fun time staying up till all hours of the morning at our hotel. Here are some highlights from the night!

Pin the Kiss on the Bachelor!
Hotel Rooftop!

Saturday, we all packed up and went home, pretty much exhausted. I spent the day giving my self a manicure and catching up on I Want To Marry Harry. Yes, I watch it. Yes, it is hilarious. Of course Saturday was the first day of summer, so also National Wear Your Lilly Day! I celebrated in my comfortable Carreen Dress. It is actually an older style, but it is surprisingly still available here in white!

I hope y'all had a beautiful weekend!!

Spot On

Thursday, June 19, 2014

I don't know about y'all but I have a THING for polka dots. Maybe I am just channeling my inner Minnie Mouse, but if it has spots, I'm usually in love. They don't even have to be black and white, in fact, sometimes I love them more when they are fun colors! Here are some dots that I'm loving lately:

Shoes | Kate Spade
Scarf | Target
Dress | LOFT
Maxi Skirt | Ann Taylor

Welp, I know I've not posted in a while and I apologize for that---I was not expecting to take a break from the bloggy world. But I did.

I am about four weeks post surgery now and while before surgery I was sure I would have tons and tons of time to create awesome posts for y'all, I was wrong. I have been spending lots of time recovering and trying to get my life back in order. To be honest, it hasn't been easy. I am typically a very independent person so having to rely on others for everything has been a struggle. When I started this blog, I vowed to myself I would keep it a happy positive place and I plan to continue down that road, and for that reason I felt it was necessary to take a break while and focus on recovering. I am starting to feel like myself again and hope to be walking again very soon.

I'll be getting back to my regular posts shortly, and also updating y'all on some of the things that have been going on recently. In the mean time, I did forget to post Lulu's first birthday. On June 13, my sweet kitten turned one! I had a little celebration for her that included a new mouse, some kitty treats (instead of cake) and an amazing new kitty tree! (Fine, I admit it, I am a crazy cat lady.) The lucky kitten even got a birthday card from her vet! Isn't that sweet? (I also like to call it enabling.)

Here she is with her new kitty tree.
Anyway, I'll be back soon with more of my usual posts!

Get your NEON on!

Thursday, June 5, 2014

I love colors. Especially bright colors. They are just so fun and happy. Being a law student, basic black suits are a must but, I am always trying to find subtle ways to incorporate some color. While I am OBSESSED with neon colors, I don't see myself wearing a neon suit anytime soon, however perhaps I can spice up the basic black with a neon accessory. *hmm* Either way, I can get behind this neon trend.

An Honest Look: Nutrition

Sunday, June 1, 2014

I suppose I should start this by saying that I gave up on being 100% paleo. It was an interesting adventure to say the least and while there were some spectacular benefits to the lifestyle I realized that it was not something that I could maintain perfectly forever. Don't get me wrong, Morgan and I made some delicious meals, and I, and I think Morgan too, had a blast with our cooking adventures. For me, there were a few things that stood out to me about the experience that I want to share with y'all.

1. Energy Stores: At first, I felt great but after a week or so I began to notice that I did not have any energy when I was at the gym. Literally, I was yawning on the elliptical, fighting to stay awake. Not normal. Morgan noticed this too. Granted, neither one of us are nutritionists so perhaps we were missing out on some nutrient, but my suspicion was and still is energy stores from carbohydrates. Don't get me wrong...I am not a carb binger...I typically eat a ton, but still.

2.  Fail-eo: This is what we called it when we ate not paleo. One thing I know about myself is that I am a perfectionist and I am very very very hard on myself when I fail. That being said, sometimes you just need a cupcake. Being in the paleo mindset I was seeing each non-paleo bit of food as a huge failure and beating myself up over it. Again, that is just how I am...even if I really wanted that cupcake and did not regret it one bit, it was still a small failure. As I'm sure you can conclude, that is not exactly great for ones mental drive to keep going.

3. Cost: Self explanatory I suppose but I'll break it down. Recipe calls for 1/4 tsp of arrow root flower, one TINY LITTLE BITY bag of arrow root flower costs $8.99. *cries* I am on a budget, I don't even know what the heck arrow root flower is and I certainly don't want to pay $9 for it. So there is that.

There are plenty of people out there who make a 100% paleo lifestyle work and that is absolutely commendable but for me I will gladly eat paleo when I am able, but if not...oh well. Eating clean, generally, is far more doable for me. That being said, I am kind of a lemming when it comes to nutrition fads, kale, goji berries, you name it. Bad, I know, but I can't help it. I've been seeing so many juice cleanses out there that I've been intrigued by, like this one for example. To be honest, the cost is basically the only thing that has prevented me from doing one at this point, like I said, lemming. That and I don't love juice and eating nothing for five days but juice is kinda scary.

They get you with the packaging huh? Or maybe I'm just a design nerd.

During one of my many stuck-on-the-couch-induced online browsing sessions I came across this article. I think it really embodies how everyone, including myself needs to start adopting this mindset. No more crazy nutrition fads, just simple healthy eating. So, that's where I'm at with that...

What are y'all's thoughts? Do you cleanse? Are you strictly paleo?
