Mentor Reveal!

Monday, September 23, 2013

My apologies for being absent from the bloggersphere! Last week was busy busy and then today I had my first writing assignment due, so this weekend was dedicated to that. But, here I am to give an update on the notable things from the past 168 hours of my life!

Last week began mentor week for the Association of Women Law Students (AWLS). The best way I can describe it is the week leading up to big/little reveal in a sorority. Our mentors spoiled us with treats all week, then we had a mixer at one of the girl's houses on Thursday where we got to find out who our mentor was. It was so much fun. My mentor is a 2L who was actually born in Michigan, and lived there for a good portion of her childhood before moving south. I was excited to have that connection with her. She is so so sweet and I can tell she is very smart. I am lucky to have her as my mentor, she has already given me some great advice. Here are the little gifts I got from her each day:

Monday's Gift
The theme was "Munchie Monday"
Tuesday's gift--pink and glitter duh!
The theme was school supplies
Wednesday's gift!
The theme was "wind down Wednesday"
Side note: this candle smells AMAZING. I can't stop burning it.
Thursday's gift! Plus a bottle of wine that she had waiting for me at the reveal! How sweet! :)
These pick me ups seriously got me thru the week. I loved every one of them.

Last week was also SBA elections. It was a pretty crazy week. There were so many good candidates running, and every day there were treats and stickers being passed out. I don't think I provided myself with one meal last week because between mentor reveal and the Chick-Fil-A and Kirspy Kream's and cupcakes and cookies I was never hungry! I am so happy for all of our 1L reps! They ran great campaigns and I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish.

Yes, that is a bow-tie on my tumbler!
Once again we had a home football game this weekend and the 1L's threw a rocking tailgate, but I don't have a single picture because it was POURING rain and we were all soaked. It was actually really fun dancing and playing corn hole in the rain. I don't think any of us actually made it to the game though...oops.

In other news my knees are healing beautifully! My girl J, brought me the Mexican version of Neosporin and let me tell you, that stuff is magic. I have no idea what it is because the label is written in spanish, but in the time span of a few hours my knees were feeling like new, and not so sabby and icky!

My last few updates for the week:

I found a knock-off of the J.Crew Tilda here, its a fraction of the price normally, AND its on sale. Win-win! It comes in other colors too---they are all so tempting!
I decided that if I was going to be forced to use a PC--I at least needed to make it pretty! I found this monogram sticker here. So cute right?!
Well...this happened. I LOVE LOVE LOVED pure barre when I was going in East Lansing...AND a new studio just opened up here...but I just can't handle how expensive the classes are! So, I decided to invest in the at home is just so much cheaper than going to the studio and I don't even have to leave my apartment.

LOFT started a 40% of everything sale this morning! This is such a great deal, and nothing is excluded. The fall collection has a great array of business and casual attire. Here are a few things that I think are perfect for any fall wardrobe:

Pleat front shit skirt---it comes in three colors and they are all awesome! Now only $35.

Well, we all know how much I love bows---this cotton 3/4 sleeve is adorable.  And only $23

Ruffle Yoke Tie Waist Dress- now only $47

Puff Sleeve Flare Skirt dress- now only $53---I am obsessed with this color!

The colors of this season are fabulous! This is the perfect opportunity to snag some pretty things and have a pretty price! Happy shopping!

Finally! I mastered the curls!

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

I love the way my hair looks when it is curled, but I am really really awful at using a curling iron. I always end up burning myself, or the curls look like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket. So, I have been on the hunt to find an easier way to get pretty curls. I tried the whole curling with a flat iron trend....that was a fail. I give mad props to those who mastered this one because I just don't get it. I tried velcro rollers...that was an even worse fail. My friend helped me before I moved and it ended with me crying while she plucked they out hair by hair. We both thought we were going to have to cut them out because they were so stuck. I came across this Remington Silk Ceramic Heated Clip Setter  and decided to give it a try.

I am in love. This thing was SO easy to use. Here is what I did:

1- Washed and dried my hair as usual.
2- Plugged in my rollers, it only took 2 minuets for them to get hot!
3- Started with my bottom layer of hair and clipped the rest up.
4- Rolled my bottom layer into 4 rollers.
5- Repeat with the rest of your layers. Note: I used the bigger rollers for the bottom laters and the smaller rollers for the top, but for my "bangs" I used the bigger roller again to give them more volume.
6- Ate breakfast.
7- Unrolled and sprayed with Big Sexy Spray and Play Volumizing Hairspray. (This is my favorite hairspray...and trust me, being a dancer I've tried A LOT).
8- You're ready to go!

Here is what I loved most about these rollers:
1-The clips are ceramic so they are not *as* harsh on your hair.
2- The clips! I've used other rollers before and the little wire u-shaped clips never worked for me. These cover the whole roller and hold them in place better.
3-They heat up so quickly! It is perfect for me, because I don't have unlimited amounts of time in the AM.
4- The rollers themselves have a very soft foam-like coating. My hair didn't get stuck at all and I felt they rolled better without causing funny bumps and kinks.

The only thing I didn't like was the size of the heating unit. I don't really have the space in my bathroom to keep it out all the time, but to me it is not a deal breaker. It fits perfectly in my linen closet. I hate clutter anyways!

This girl needs a bubble...

This week was rough...and not just for me, I think every person in my classes was feeling it too. K and I decided on Thursday that we would treat ourselves to pedicures and Jimmy Johns to relax a little bit.

I am obsessed with Jimmy Johns...and until last week, there was not one anywhere near where I live. Thank goodness they opened one up. :)

So why was this week so rough? Well, first the work load seemed to be a bit heavier than usual. Second, remember when I said I had the plague? Yea...that was an understatement. On Tuesday I was sitting in my Torts class when I realized I could not hear...naturally I started panicking and thought it was going to pass out, so right after class I drove to urgent care, or doc-in-the-box as they are so lovingly referred to here. Turns out, I had a double ear infection, in both ears. The doctor was so so nice and got me in and out with antibiotics quickly, but boy was I miserable. I could hardly stand to do my homework because my ears were so painful. Now, I don't like being on antibiotics, they just always sort of mess with me, so in addition to actually being sick I was feeling dizzy all week. Friday after class I went home to lay in bed and relax when disaster struck. (okay, that is possibly a wee bit dramatic...) Not only was my ear infection totally messing with my balance (I mean, seriously, I was walking around like a drunk person.) but my antibiotics were adding to my lack of balance, so while walking to my apartment from my car I took a spill. Like, spill with a capital S. Ohmigoodness. I didn't catch myself, at all, and then proceeded to lay on the sidewalk and cry.

I told you it was bad.
The picture above is actually from they look 10000 times better than they did when it happened. Let me tell you, knees are the worst thing ever to injure...walking is such a task, not to mention they are swollen from the fall. After I got all bandaged up I called my mom and sobbed like a 4 year old...I think that was just the straw that broke the camel's back of my week. Anyway, in an effort to not sit at home and feel sorry for myself, I joined my fellow members of SAS at the local gun range for an afternoon of being social and doing some target practice. Later, a bunch of us went out for Mexican, we had a great time full of lots of laughs and it was just what I needed after my dramatic morning.

Saturday, of course, was football Saturday! We were much more organized this week and several of my classmates had planned a 1L tailgate, and then S's parents also had one planned. We ended up merging tailgates and had a ton of fun playing cornhole, bocci ball, drinking beer and eating yummy food. The game was a blow out...we left at halftime because we were up 47-0.

I was super proud of my game day attire. Yes, those are orange grills on my dress. How perfect right!?
K and I decked out in our orange and black. Bear down!
Sunday has been full of reading and briefing, along with a quick trip to Target to get some more Neosporin for my poor little knees. I was SO excited to find that the Phillip Lin line had launched...and that no one at my Target seemed to know or care what it was! I was shocked cause this stuff literally sold out online in minuets.

I am obsessed! :)
I was able to snag a pashli bag in a beautiful taupe color. The photo doesn't really do it justice.

I also have my eye on this dress, so gorgeous!
On my way out the door, I found a wonderful little surprise sitting on my doormat. It was so sweet and exactly the pick me up I needed today. I appreciated it greatly.

Aren't they pretty? I feel so blessed to have the people in my life that I do. :)
Today, I also got the email that the Lilly Pulitzer monogram sweaters are now available for purchase! I was so happy when "L" was voted as one of the letters...not that I was concerned. L for Lilly, duh!

So cute though, right?!
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I am super excited for the week ahead because we get our mentors for the All Women Law reminds me a little of big/little reveal. I can't wait to find out who my mentor is, it is such a wonderful way to connect with other law students.

Remember Lisa Frank?

Saturday, September 14, 2013

I came across this recently and thought I would share. I was obsessed with her school supplies as a child. I remember when they opened a Lisa Frank store in my local mall, I could have died of happiness!

Seriously, how fun!

I have the plague...

Sunday, September 8, 2013

...oh how I wish I were kidding. I don't know if it is just because I am 13 hours too far away for my Mama to take care of me, of if I have actually never been this sick before, but ohmigoodness, this illness needs to go away fast.

Rewind to the happy things that happened this week before I became bed ridden:

Thursday: Mo and I made the executive decision that cookies were more important than contracts.  We were right. YUM. These were made with pecans that were fresh picked in North Georgia this summer.
HA. Funny how the best moments always get captured! Left to right is me, N, and K.
Both these photos were taken Friday night, the Student Bar Association hosted a taste of the town night featuring a sampling of lots of local foods. Our class ended up out at our favorite local bar after words for a few drinks and LOTS of dancing. It was a blast.
Saturday I woke up with this awful illness, but suited up in my Spartan Green anyway, even though I was going to N's parent's house to watch the Georgia game.
This was essentially the only thing I had the energy to eat / make. It was delicious and helped my throat.
Sunday: the theme of the day was tissues, tea, water and studying.
I have pretty much been glued to my 'study chair' all day alternating between sniffles and highlighting. Luckily I have a stash of tea and DayQuil so I have at least been able to be somewhat productive, between calling my Mommy to complain and cuddling with da Bunny, that is. *sniffle* After getting my work for Monday done, I decided that the ONLY thing that would help me feel better was a fountain Dr. Pepper. So I mustered up the energy to drag my butt out of my apartment to get one. I am SO glad I did, and here is why:

A few posts ago, I blogged about my Cara Box--I was received a box from Cait, and sent a box to Jess. I got along fabulously with both my partners and we promised to stay in touch. (duh!) Last week, I got an email from Jess, telling me to keep an eye out for my mail...I was obviously super excited because a) who doesn't love getting snail mail and b) I was totally not expecting her to send me anything. So, today on my quest for Dr. Pepper, I checked my mail box. (I didn't yesterday because I was so sick I went to bed after the Georgia game ended.) I got my little surprise from Jess---and let me tell you, it made my day of tissues and feeling just generally ick SO much better!!!

She sent me a mixed cd- with some AMAZING tracks on it! And, a cute little card. The front of it said  "don't sweat the small stuff, you have plenty of big things to worry about" which were the precise words of encouragement I needed today. Funny how that works, huh?
So thank you times a million to Miss Jess for not only making my day, but being such a sweet and caring person. Girl--I might be able to muster a few ROLL TIDE's just for you. :)

This popped up in my IG feed last week. I re-gramed it. Again, the exact words I needed at that moment in time. Hope they inspire y'all too.

Hope everyone has a happy week. Oh! And don't forget to shop the Fashion Week sale that Kelsie has going on with Chloe & Isabel. It goes until Thursday this week, so you still have some time! My half-birthday is coming October.

All I am saying is that I would look super cute riding around town on this bike. With this basket on the front. Oh and of course...

With this puppy in the basket
or this one...or both.

I'm kidding...sorta.

How I Do It- Study Tips!

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Admittedly, I was one of those people throughout high school and even into college who didn't have to spend hours upon hours buried in my books to do well. But I knew coming to law school, that would have to change...real quick. Being the A-type person that I am, (Thanks Mom.), I devised my 'plan for success' to ensure that I didn't become overwhelmed too quickly. So far, I think it is going quite well.

My plan started with me getting a day or so ahead in my classes, so that during the week I wasn't up to all hours of the night reading. I do not function well on no sleep, so I knew that this was key. The thing about getting ahead is that it requires dedication. I know, and have accepted, the fact that I will probably have to give up more of the very little social time that I have. As depressing as that may sound, it does have some benefits. It allows me to be able to read the material two times through before each class. One time, throughly, as I am preparing and then again another time the night before class where I can just read the notes and key points I pulled out the first time. This also makes life wayyy easier when it comes to outlining.

Outlining is the next step in my plan for success. Essentially, this is a large document that encompasses every concept covered throughout the semester, that comes in handy when studying for the final. The thing about outlining is that it can become a seriously daunting task if it gets put off. And, it is really easy to put off because it is not the most pressing issue. I made a promise to myself that I would keep current on my outlining (like every two weeks or so).

The last step in my plan is to stay organized. This sounds like a no brainer, but it is so important. I am generally a really organized person as it when I added this to the plan it was more of a plan to be overly organized. I am very particular about school I can't focus if I am not using a certain pen. So, I first stocked up on all my favorites to ensure that I would never be without. I make lists upon lists upon lists so I made sure I had enough list paper laying around all corners of my apartment. I have my agenda, that I carry with me everywhere to keep track of basically everything. And finally, I color coded my binders and notebooks for each class. Generally, I hate binders because they are so bulky and annoying to carry around but I broke down and decided for the sake of keeping chronologically organized they were necessary.

My jar of pens and highlighters. Like I said, I am very particular. I LOVE RSVP fine point pens, but I also found Target brand pens and highlighters that are just as great! (and cheap!)
My color coded binders and notebooks. Again, I just purchased Target brand. They had some awesome coupons on their Cartwheel App, so I went for cheap again! (Girlfriend is on a budget).
I used a Lilly Pulitzer agenda, a) because it is pretty and b) because there is actually enough space for my life to fit. I upgraded to the Jumbo Agenda this year, and I am so thankful I did! It is perfect.
My Cara Box Partner Cait, sent me this notepad and I LOVE it Each week, I lay out every assignment for each day in each class so I can cross them off when I complete them. Not only does it keep me organized, but crossing something off a list is just so satisfying.

Weekend Recap!

Big News: I survived my first *real* week of law school...OH and I even spent time in the library. For those of you who knew me during my undergraduate career, you know just exactly how shocking that second piece of news is. But really. I truly despise libraries. Anyway, the week was tough...lots and lots of reading and preparing but I think I am finally finding those study habits that are really going to work for me. Not to mention, I feel like I am learning! Yay! Most important lesson of the week:

Don't be stupid!

After a hard week at school I rewarded myself with some fun this weekend, and thanks to the three day weekend due to labor day...I actually don't feel too guilty about it...yet. (Check in with me around 6 pm today and see if I have changed my mind.

Friday: K and I spent the afternoon after classes finished running errands and collecting as much orange gear as possible in preparation for the game on Saturday. I, of course, was rocking my green and white in honor of my Spartans taking on those WMU Broncos. Needless to say...those Spartan Dawgs prevailed.

Go Green! Go White!
After our errands, we met up with N for a delicious dinner. We were lucky enough to score some of this restaurants banana pudding after dinner. (Usually you have to call in the morning to reserve your I am not kidding) It was so good. I've never had banana pudding before, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but it was about the texture of a mousse and was inside this flakey pastry that tasted like Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

We called it an early night because we wanted to be well rested for the game on Saturday! It was the first football game played here since WWII! It was so exciting, and we won! BEAR DOWN!

Obviously, sported my school spirited Jacks!

What I wore to the game. Boy, was I glad I wore a was HOT.

The whole football complex is brand new, like literally finished days ago. It was beautiful!
K and I at the game! :)
More big news:

Daddy got an iPhone. This is groundbreaking. Up until now, he had a Razor Flip Phone...and he REFUSED to upgrade...and then he got an IPHONE?! Crazy! Now he can text me, which is great. Welcome to the 21st century Daddy! Now, I just need to work on Mom getting one too...

Go take advantage of those Labor Day sales while I am holed up in my study chair reading! Have a great Labor Day Y'all! (more big news: there it is...y' is just way more convenient that you guys.)
